Curriculum

CURRÍCULUM EN ESPAÑOL –

Phase 1 of the PACE Curriculum spanned 6 months and included required weekly sessions (“Full Cohort Sessions” and “Learning Groups”), optional sessions (“Supplemental Trainings”), and “HomeFun,” or asynchronous homework assignments. The curriculum is structured around the VAST model, an iterative design process created by the Urban Permaculture Institute, and the Community Needs Assessment (“CNA”), a written report identifying actionable strategies to advance climate equity.

Key components of the PACE Curriculum are provided below for your personal use.

The goal of the Vision Module is to develop explicit, aligned, and collective community objectives that tap into cultural identity and values while trust-building and fostering meaningful relationships. Topics covered in the curriculum include Deepening Connections, a Systems View of the Planet, Making Equity Real, Healing Centered Engagement, Race and Caste Equity, and the Spectrum of Community Engagement to Ownership.

The goal of the Assessment Module is to deepen the understanding of community needs by gathering an inventory of existing conditions through the mapping of present-day political, cultural, and physical assets and challenges. Topics covered in the curriculum include Community Ecosystem Framing, Group Governance & Decision-Making Structures, Data Equity, and Climate Equity Tools.

The goal of the Strategy Module is to develop a menu of possible solutions tailored to community needs while prioritizing multi-benefit approaches. Topics covered in the curriculum include System Levers, Stacking Functions, Decolonizing Solutions, Cultural Organizing, Climate Equity Blueprint, and Desirability, Feasibility & Viability.

The goal of the Timeline Module is to organize previously developed strategies to identify those that create the greatest impact yet require the least amount of change and then develop a plan for the implementation of these strategies. Topics covered in the curriculum include California Climate Finance, Code Switching, and Effective Grant Writing.

Supplemental trainings took place throughout Phase 1 of the PACE program as optional additional sessions on miscellaneous topics that may not have otherwise fit into the VAST curriculum. Each training is a standalone session on a single topic.
